Nearshoring vs Offshoring: Which Is Right for a UK Business?

By TalentDock Editorial Team · Updated 24 September 2026 · 8 min read

Quick answer
Nearshoring moves work to a nearby country in a similar time zone; for UK firms that usually means Poland, Romania, Portugal or elsewhere in Europe. Offshoring moves it further away, typically to Asia, for lower cost and larger talent pools. Nearshoring wins on time-zone overlap and simpler data rules; offshoring wins on cost, often by half or more. Many UK SMEs offshore with shifts that overlap the UK working day to get both.
Definitions

Onshoring, nearshoring, offshoring and reshoring

Onshoring

Work stays in the UK, possibly in a lower-cost region such as the North East or Northern Ireland.

Nearshoring

Work moves to a nearby country with 0-2 hours’ time difference, for example Poland, Romania, Portugal or Bulgaria.

Offshoring

Work moves to a distant country, for example India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines or South Africa.

Reshoring

Work previously sent abroad is brought back to the UK, usually after quality or control problems.

Note on data: the UK recognises EEA countries as adequate, so personal data can flow to Poland or Portugal without extra transfer paperwork. Sri Lanka and the Philippines have no UK adequacy decision, so you need a documented safeguard. This is routine with a good provider but it is a real difference.

Cost

The cost gap in practice

For a full-time bookkeeper, administrator or support agent, nearshore rates in Central and Eastern Europe are typically well above Asian rates, while still below UK costs once employer National Insurance (15% above the threshold since April 2025), pension and overheads are added.

Through TalentDock, a dedicated full-time team member in Sri Lanka or the Philippines costs from £1,195 a month all-in, compared with roughly £2,900 a month for a UK hire on £27,000. See our pricing bands.

Time zones

Solving the time-zone question when you offshore

Time zone is the main reason UK firms consider nearshoring. In practice it is easy to engineer around:

UK-aligned shifts

Staff in Sri Lanka working 1:30pm-10:30pm local time cover a full 9am-6pm UK day in summer. Philippine teams commonly work UK hours on night shift, which is normal in their BPO sector.

Overlap model

A 3-4 hour overlap for stand-ups and questions, with focused work done before UK teams log on. Good for bookkeeping, reporting and development.

Follow-the-sun

Offshore staff clear queues overnight so UK mornings start with a clean inbox. Good for support and monitoring.

See our country guides for Sri Lanka and the Philippines.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between nearshoring and offshoring?

Nearshoring moves work to a nearby country in a similar time zone. Offshoring moves it to a distant country, usually for lower cost.

Is nearshoring more expensive than offshoring?

Usually yes. Nearshore countries in Europe have higher wages than Asian offshore hubs, so savings versus a UK hire are smaller.

Where do UK companies nearshore?

Poland, Romania, Portugal, Bulgaria, Czechia and other European countries are common choices.

What is reshoring?

Bringing work that was previously done abroad back to the UK.

What is onshoring?

Keeping work in the UK, sometimes moving it to a lower-cost UK region instead of abroad.

Can offshore staff work UK hours?

Yes. Teams in Sri Lanka and the Philippines commonly work shifts aligned to the UK day.

Does nearshoring make GDPR easier?

Yes for EEA countries, which the UK treats as adequate. Offshore destinations without adequacy need an IDTA or UK Addendum and a transfer risk assessment.
