Work stays in the UK, possibly in a lower-cost region such as the North East or Northern Ireland.
Work moves to a nearby country with 0-2 hours’ time difference, for example Poland, Romania, Portugal or Bulgaria.
Work moves to a distant country, for example India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines or South Africa.
Work previously sent abroad is brought back to the UK, usually after quality or control problems.
| Factor | Nearshoring (e.g. Poland, Romania, Portugal) | Offshoring (e.g. Sri Lanka, Philippines, India) |
|---|---|---|
| Time difference from UK | 0-2 hours | Sri Lanka +4.5/5.5h, Philippines +7/8h, India +4.5/5.5h |
| Working-day overlap | Full | Partial by default; full with UK-aligned shifts |
| Relative labour cost | Medium | Low |
| Talent pool size | Smaller, competitive for tech | Very large, strong in finance, admin, support and IT |
| English | Good, varies by country | Widely used in business in Sri Lanka, Philippines, India |
| UK GDPR transfers | EEA covered by UK adequacy regulations | Usually needs IDTA or UK Addendum plus a transfer risk assessment |
| Travel | 2-4 hour flights | 10-14 hour flights |
| Best for | Real-time collaboration, EU customers, nearshore dev squads | Cost-sensitive full-time roles, extended-hours coverage |
Note on data: the UK recognises EEA countries as adequate, so personal data can flow to Poland or Portugal without extra transfer paperwork. Sri Lanka and the Philippines have no UK adequacy decision, so you need a documented safeguard. This is routine with a good provider but it is a real difference.
For a full-time bookkeeper, administrator or support agent, nearshore rates in Central and Eastern Europe are typically well above Asian rates, while still below UK costs once employer National Insurance (15% above the threshold since April 2025), pension and overheads are added.
Through TalentDock, a dedicated full-time team member in Sri Lanka or the Philippines costs from £1,195 a month all-in, compared with roughly £2,900 a month for a UK hire on £27,000. See our pricing bands.
Time zone is the main reason UK firms consider nearshoring. In practice it is easy to engineer around:
Staff in Sri Lanka working 1:30pm-10:30pm local time cover a full 9am-6pm UK day in summer. Philippine teams commonly work UK hours on night shift, which is normal in their BPO sector.
A 3-4 hour overlap for stand-ups and questions, with focused work done before UK teams log on. Good for bookkeeping, reporting and development.
Offshore staff clear queues overnight so UK mornings start with a clean inbox. Good for support and monitoring.
See our country guides for Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
| Choose nearshoring if... | Choose offshoring if... |
|---|---|
| Your team collaborates in real time all day | Cost is a primary driver |
| You serve mainly EU customers in EU languages | You need English-speaking finance, admin, support or tech staff |
| You want frequent in-person visits | You want to scale several seats quickly |
| Budget allows a smaller saving | You are happy to set shifts that overlap UK hours |

Nearshoring moves work to a nearby country in a similar time zone. Offshoring moves it to a distant country, usually for lower cost.
Usually yes. Nearshore countries in Europe have higher wages than Asian offshore hubs, so savings versus a UK hire are smaller.
Poland, Romania, Portugal, Bulgaria, Czechia and other European countries are common choices.
Bringing work that was previously done abroad back to the UK.
Keeping work in the UK, sometimes moving it to a lower-cost UK region instead of abroad.
Yes. Teams in Sri Lanka and the Philippines commonly work shifts aligned to the UK day.
Yes for EEA countries, which the UK treats as adequate. Offshore destinations without adequacy need an IDTA or UK Addendum and a transfer risk assessment.
