Hire offshore accountants for UK businesses

Hire offshore accountants who work as part of your UK team: dedicated, full-time ACCA, CIMA and CA Sri Lanka qualified or part-qualified professionals, working in your Xero, QuickBooks or Sage and reporting to you. TalentDock employs, equips and manages them in Sri Lanka. You direct the work and keep sign-off.

The role

What an offshore accountant does

An offshore accountant runs your routine finance work end to end: closing the month, keeping ledgers clean and producing the numbers you rely on. They sit inside your team on your accounting software, working agreed UK-overlap hours, while your UK accountant or FD keeps the advisory work and statutory sign-off.

Day-to-day responsibilities

Offshore accounting roles you can hire

Hire one accountant or build a small finance team. Every role is a named, full-time person who works only for you.

Tax and compliance preparation

What stays in the UK: statutory sign-off, tax advice, audit opinions and submissions to HMRC and Companies House stay with you or your UK-qualified accountant. Your offshore accountant prepares the work for review.

The trend

Why UK firms and finance teams are hiring offshore accountants in 2026

UK practices and finance teams are short of qualified people. Employment costs rose again when employer National Insurance went to 15% above a £5,000 threshold in April 2025, and workloads still peak every VAT quarter and at year-end. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, which started in April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000, adds quarterly updates on top. Hiring offshore accountants adds dedicated capacity in weeks, without another UK headcount decision.

What you gain

The talent

Hire qualified accountants from Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a long-established accountancy profession. CIMA and ACCA are mainstream routes there, and candidates sit the same exams, in English, as their UK peers. CA Sri Lanka is the national chartered body. Sri Lanka is 4.5 hours ahead of the UK in summer and 5.5 in winter, which gives a shared working window across the UK morning. Fuller UK-hours cover is agreed role by role before a hire starts.

Whichever hub fits the role, Sri Lanka or the Philippines, TalentDock is the legal employer. We handle contracts, payroll, equipment, IT and HR, and put the data-protection footing in place (a DPA and the UK IDTA for restricted transfers). Because your hire is employed overseas and works wholly outside the UK, there is no UK employer NIC, no auto-enrolment pension and no IR35 status determination for you to make.

General information, not legal or tax advice. Confirm your position with a qualified UK adviser.

The numbers

Offshore accountant vs UK accountant: cost comparison

The table sets the cost of employing each role in the UK against TalentDock’s all-in monthly fee for a mid-level hire. UK figures are average advertised salaries plus the two statutory employer costs. Recruitment fees, equipment, software and desk space would add to the UK side.

Sources: UK salaries from the CV Screen Accountancy & Finance Salary Survey 2025 (average advertised salaries). UK cost to employ = salary + employer National Insurance at 15% above £5,000 + the 3% minimum employer pension contribution on qualifying earnings (2026/27 rates). How hiring an offshore accountant works

1

Brief

Tell us the role, software, hours and seniority. We turn it into a scorecard.

2

Shortlist

We source, test and interview, then send three to five candidates with their qualification status.

3

Interview

You interview and choose. Nobody starts without your approval.

4

Contract and set-up

One services agreement with a DPA and IDTA. We provide equipment and a secure workspace.

5

Start and review

Your accountant starts in your systems. We run payroll, HR and monthly check-ins.

Most roles go from brief to start date in two to four weeks.

Compliance

UK data protection and accounting standards

Contract before access

Every engagement runs under a services agreement, a Data Processing Agreement and a UK International Data Transfer Agreement with a transfer risk assessment. Sri Lanka has no UK adequacy decision, so the IDTA is what makes the transfer lawful.

Your systems, your controls

Your accountant logs in to your accounting software with their own user, the permissions you set and two-factor authentication. Client data stays in your systems instead of being exported.

Prepared offshore, signed off in the UK

Work is prepared for review. Statutory accounts, tax returns and HMRC submissions stay under your sign-off and your own agent credentials.

For accountancy practices

Check your professional body’s rules on subcontracting and confidentiality (ICAEW, ACCA or AAT) and reflect offshore processing in your engagement letters and privacy notice. We share our DPA and IDTA up front so you can do that.

FAQ

Hiring offshore accountants: common questions

Are your offshore accountants qualified?

Many are CIMA, ACCA or CA (Sri Lanka) qualified or part-qualified. We match qualification level to the role and share credentials in the shortlist.

Can they work in our accounting software?

Yes. They work in your Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or NetSuite exactly as an in-house hire would, with their own user and the permissions you set.

Who signs off our statutory accounts?

Your UK accountant or auditor keeps statutory sign-off. Your offshore accountant handles the preparation and day-to-day work that feeds it.

How much does it cost to hire offshore accountants for a UK firm?

A qualified offshore accountant through TalentDock starts at about £1,466 a month, and a mid-level accountant is about £1,832 a month, all-in. Employing a UK accountant on the £45,057 average salary costs about £52,230 a year with employer NICs and pension, so the mid-level fee is around 58% lower. Accounts assistants and AP/AR clerks cost less; senior management accountants cost more. See the cost comparison on this page, our pricing page or the full offshore accountant cost breakdown.

How quickly can we hire an offshore accountant?

Most roles go from brief to start date in two to four weeks: sourcing, screening, a shortlist for interview, then onboarding. Where we already have a vetted candidate for a common profile, it can be quicker.

Is our financial data safe and GDPR-compliant?

Yes. Every engagement runs under a signed Data Processing Agreement and a UK International Data Transfer Agreement (IDTA) for the cross-border transfer, with role-based access control on your systems.

What's the difference between an offshore accountant and a freelancer?

A freelancer works for several clients on their own schedule, with no continuity guarantee. Your TalentDock accountant works only for you, full-time, on agreed hours, with attendance tracking, performance reviews and a replacement guarantee. It is closer to having an employee than a contractor.

Can an offshore accountant handle VAT quarter or year-end busy-season scaling?

Yes. Many firms add offshore accountants ahead of VAT quarters, self-assessment season and year-end. Each extra seat is a full-time role with a notice period set out in your agreement, so plan peak capacity a few weeks ahead rather than day to day.

What happens if the placement isn't the right fit?

We operate a replacement guarantee: if a placement isn’t working out, we requalify and replace the hire at no extra recruitment fee within the guarantee period set out in your agreement.

Will AI replace the need for an offshore accountant?

AI tools speed up data entry and first-pass reconciliation, but you still need a qualified person who understands your books, catches exceptions and owns the judgement calls. The practical set-up is AI-assisted software plus a dedicated accountant who checks its output. See Is AI replacing bookkeepers?

Can an offshore accountant submit returns to HMRC?

They prepare VAT returns, payroll and accounts for review. Submission and sign-off stay with you or your UK-qualified accountant, under your own HMRC credentials.

Do you work with accountancy practices as well as businesses?

Yes. Practices use offshore accountants for accounts preparation, bookkeeping and tax-return preparation across client files. Businesses use them inside the finance team. In both cases the person works only for you.

Where are your offshore accountants based?

Mainly in Sri Lanka, with the Philippines as a second hub. TalentDock is the legal employer in-country and provides the workspace, equipment and HR.

What hours do offshore accountants work?

Sri Lanka is 4.5 hours ahead of the UK in summer and 5.5 in winter. A standard day overlaps the UK morning. If you need fuller UK-hours cover, we agree a shifted schedule before the hire starts.
